CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH:AN AMERICAN CELEBRATION

The month of February is the time that MJJA – RED takes pride in joining the country in celebrating Black History Month. Black History Month is celebrated every February in the U.S. and Canada, and in October in the U.K. It’s an important time for remembering contributions of African Americans by sharing significant people, events, and achievements of the African diaspora.

Black History Month can be traced back to September 1915, when historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History This organization was dedicated to researching and promoting the achievements of not only Black Americans but also all prominent people of African descent. This group would go on to sponsor a National Negro History Week in 1926.

Today, many organizations and corporations continue to celebrate Black History Month in various ways, including ethnic food festivals, artistic performances, speeches, and programs displaying African attire and artifacts.
